Cancer

Cancer

Cancer is the result of abnormal growth of cells that multiply out of control and disrupt the normal functioning of one or more organs. More than hundred types of cancer exist including breast, skin, lung, colon, or prostate cancer, or lymphoma and they are often named for the organ or type of cell in which they start.

Causes of cancer are different, they include aging, genetic predisposition, few viral infections, gene mutations, diet, obesity, hormones, sedentary lifestyle or exposure to carcinogens such as tobacco, toxins, chemicals, radiation, the sun, etc. The majority of those causes could be prevented through a little bit of precaution. Here are few tips that were scientifically proven to help prevent cancer development:

  • Stay physically active
  • Have a normal body weight, neither low nor overweight
  • Consume adequate caloric intake
  • Quit smoking
  • Use sunscreen or prevent staying for a long period of time exposed to sun
  • Ask your doctor about few vaccinations that are available that can protect you from some forms of viral infections
  • Decrease the intake of fatty foods, especially those high in unhealthy fats
  • Reduce the consumption of processed, fried, or charbroiled meats
  • Increase the intake of fiber rich foods as they bind, dilute, and rapidly remove potential carcinogens from the gastrointestinal tract
  • Have adequate levels of folate and antioxidants such as vitamin E, C and beta carotene. Prevent having them in excess as studies have shown that surplus intake could promote cancer
  • You should meet your daily needs of both Calcium and vitamin D
  • Increase your intake of fruits, vegetables and whole foods as they are high in phytochemicals that are also called anti-carcinogens
  • Systematic screening such as breast self-examination, mammograms, testicular self-examination, or Pap smears
  • Control your blood pressure and blood sugar levels
